Objects Needed:
rope and ring
Presentation:
A solid brass ring is passed along a doubled length of rope. During the examples given, it is yanked from the rope without being caught. Finally, it is yanked and amazingly caught by the rope in a knot. (Or, you may position the rope on the ring as shown in the graphic below. Pulling on the different sides of the ring, will determine whether the knot if formed by the rope.)
Application:
All people who are children of God are led by His Spirit. They listen to the voice of God’s Spirit and do what He says. That’s why they are ready for His coming. We know we need to learn His voice. We know we need to be listening, not ignoring Him. But how do we actually resist temptation or make other right choices? By listening to the Spirit. It’s like this. In my hand I have a rope and a ring. (Display) Let’s say that the rope is you and that the ring is a temptation or other wrong decision that Satan wants you to make.
Examples:
1. You are about to lose your temper. The Holy Spirit reminds you of the verse that you read, Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. You control your temper. (Ring comes off.) You listened to the Spirit and didn’t get caught in that trap.
2. You’re parents are getting a divorce. You have to make a decision about which parent to live with. It’s a tough decision and you don’t know what to do. The Holy Spirit speaks to you about which family will be best. You make the right decision for your future. (Ring comes off.) You didn’t get caught in that trap by making a poor decision.
3. You feel like you are too tired to read your Bible today. The Holy Spirit reminds you that you need to know scripture so that you can use it to resist temptation like Jesus did. You read your Bible and escape that trap!
But what would happen if you didn’t listen to what the Holy Spirit said when you were angry, or you weren’t listening when you needed to make a decision about your parents, or if you just ignored Him when He said to read your Bible? You’ll be caught in Satan’s traps! (Ring catches.)
If we are going to be ready for Jesus’ return, we must be led by the Holy Spirit. We must listen to His voice and do what He says.
