This is an excellent article. We have a small church, so we are trying a system of doing a unit of lessons, and then switching. Every so often we put a bulletin announcement in to remind the congregation that all Sunday School teachers would like to work on a rotation basis, to allow participation in the Adult Sunday School. We don't have child care during the sermon; parents are on their own there. However, if we get an influx of preschoolers, we will run a small story and craft time during the sermon only. I have been in settings where we have been in church so long that the kids pack a lunch. Babies and preschoolers should be present in corporate worship times as this is a real blessing to parents who no longer have children at home. I have heard seniors say they are missing all the babies and preschoolers, because they are whisked away as soon as they arrive. Keep your church a community, not all isolated from each other in age groups during corporate worship. All Kids need to learn to sit in service, listen respectfully, and preschoolers can do this for a reasonable time if taught from an early age to sit quietly during a sermon on mother or father's knee. Most kids I see now a days haven't got a clue how to sit nicely for 45 minutes. Let's help them by starting early.
