Characters: Mike, Mom, Ralph*, Vinnie*
(Mike and Mom are on left side of stage-Mike’s room)
Mike: Good-night, Mom.
Mom: Good-night, Sweetheart. Don’t forget to say your prayers.
Mike: OK, Mom. I will.
(Mom exits to right of stage-Mom’s room-and lies down)
Mike: Dear Jesus. (Very sleepily) Thank you for this day and the breath you give me…ZzzzZzzz…(Startled) OH! Um, I’m too tired to pray right now, I’ll pray in the morning…ZzzzZzzz
(Mike lies down. Jaws theme starts slowly as Vinnie creeps up slowly and acts like he is going to bite Mike. Mike awakes, Ralph drops down, and music stops suddenly)
Mike: What?! I thought I saw something! Boys and girls, did you see anything? OK, I’m going back to sleep now. Let me know if you see anything, OK?
(Repeat scare scenario, except with Ralph instead of Vinnie)
Mike: What?! I thought I saw something again! Did you see anything? Oh well, I’ll go back to bed now. But let me know if you see anything, OK?
(Repeat scare scenario with both Ralph and Vinnie, only this time, Mike jumps up in time to get a good look and scream at Ralph. He then runs to his mom for help.)
Mike: Mom! Mom!
(Mom wakes up)
Mom: What is it, honey?
Mike: There are monsters in my room! I woke up and saw them!
Mom: Well, let’s go take a look.
(Both go to Mike’s room and look all around)
Mom: I don’t see anything, honey. Are you sure they were here?
Mike: I promise I saw them. They were right here in this room!
Mom: Well, let’s ask the kids what they think. Kids, do you see any monsters in this room? Mike, I want you to go back to bed, but I want you to say your prayers first. God will protect you. 1 John 4:4 says, “Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world.” This means that God is bigger than any problem or fear you have, and nothing can stop God’s protection when you are His child. So you don’t need to be afraid. If you do get scared, though, remember that scripture. Can you remember it?
Mike: Oh, sure. 1 Ron 3 :60, “Greater is the flea that that itches me than the flea that is in the board.”
Mom: What? 1 Ron…greater is the flea…in the board? No, no, no! You’ve got it all wrong! It’s 1 John 4:4, “Greater is He that is in me than He that is in the world.” Say it with me, Mike.
Both: “Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4
Mom: Say it with us, kids.
All: “Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4
(Repeat until kids learn verse)
Mike: Wow! I feel better already. I know that God is protecting me and I have nothing to fear. Good-night, Mom.
Mom: Good-night, sweetheart. Remember to say your prayers.
Mike: You’d better believe I will!
(Mike goes to his room and Mom goes to sleep)
Mike: Dear Jesus, thank You for this day. Thank You for my mom and thank You that she cares for me so much. Thank You for caring so much, too. I pray You will protect me as I sleep, so I won’t be afraid. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
(Mike goes to sleep. Jaws theme starts. Scare scene is repeated exactly the same as before, except for the third time when Mike sees the monsters again.)
Mike: AAAAAAAAAH! Monsters! What do I do? What do I do? What was that verse Mom taught me? Oh Yeah! 1 John 4:4, “Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world.”(monsters jerk back) Come on, Kids, say it with me…”Greater is He that is in me than He that is in the world!” (monsters start shaking) Now as loud as you can! “GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN ME THAN HE THAT IS IN THE WORLD!” (monsters fall down and Ralph is thrown over the back tier of the puppet stage for everyone to see his demise) Whoo! We did it…You know what (calming down)? I should have just trusted in Jesus to protect me the very first time I was scared. You should do the same. Whenever you get afraid, no matter how scary it is, remember that God is right there beside you and the Holy Spirit is protecting you. Also, remember that scripture; “Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4
*This script was originally written and performed in Panama as part of a missions effort there in July, 2003. Andreas and I worked tirelessly on the plot and scripture and his wife Katy worked very hard on translating it for us. I pray it ministers to your children. Ralph was a fluffy dog puppet and Vinnie was a vulture. It was easy to use them as monsters since they had such a maniacal look about them…Find the scariest puppets you can!
