Application:

How do you listen to the voice of God’s Spirit? What does God’s voice sound like? If you are going to make the right decision, you need to be able to follow the right voice. Here we have a shoe. (Show shoe.) A shoe is often used to represent following someone. How can you follow the right voice? You see, when you are faced with a temptation, you may hear many voices in your mind. You may hear the voice of Satan trying to get you to give in to that temptation. Or, if you are making a tough decision, you may hear his voice in your mind trying to get you to make the wrong decision. Then, there are your own thoughts. In Proverbs, God says the ways we usually think are right lead to death, so we don’t want to just follow our own thoughts. There are also the ideas of families and friends. How can we know to follow the right voice? Let’s think about it.

How many of you have dogs? (Display dog picture.) How many of you have a dog that comes when you call it? Most dogs do. When someone loses a dog and comes to re-claim it at the pound, do you know one of the ways they can tell if the person is actually the dog’s owner? They see if the dog knows the person’s voice. A dog will always recognize the voice of his owner because he has spent so much time with that owner listening to his or her voice. It is the same way with us learning the voice of God’s Spirit. Only as we daily take time to read scripture and pray, only as we spend a lot of time with God will we recognize His voice. In John chapter 10, Jesus compares people to sheep and says, I know my sheep and they know me. (v. 14) The sheep will never follow a stranger, but run away from him because they don’t recognize his voice. (v. 5). If you are one of God’s children, if you are ready for His coming, you will follow God’s voice. First, however, just like this dog with his owner, you need to learn His voice by spending time with Him each day in scripture and prayer.
