What Do You Want To Be

Text (Matthew 4:18-20) Walking along the beach of Lake Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers: Simon (later called Peter) and Andrew. They were fishing, throwing their nets into the lake. It was their regular work. Jesus said to them, "Come with me. I’ll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass." They didn’t ask questions, but simply dropped their nets and followed. (The Message-Eugene H. Peterson)

Thought starters

It’s another year you know. You’re getting older; do any of you know what you want to be when you grow up? How will you do that job? Will you have to go to school, college?

Once you start that job will you do a good job? Will you like it? Will you change your mind before you make your final decision on what you want to be? Will you change your mind after you decide?

Is it possible for someone to change your mind? Listen to this story from the book of Matthew. (Tell the story using the text from The Message)

Do you think Simon and Andrew grew up wanting to be fishermen? That was their regular work. Do you think they were good fishermen? Being fishermen was how they paid for their home, clothes and food.

Did they stop being fishermen? Jesus asked them to be fishers of men and women. He just wanted them to lose the boat.

As Matthew tells us, Simon and Andrew didn’t ask any questions, they dropped their nets and followed Jesus.

No matter what you decide to do with your life, whatever job you choose, you will always have a second job. Jesus will always ask you to be a fisher of men and women. You might be a Sunday School teacher, a pastor, lawyer, police or fireman, nurse, electrician…It doesn’t matter. He will always ask you to tell others about Him. You will always be a fisherman for Jesus. Just like Simon Peter and Andrew. Congratulations on your new position. Now drop what you are doing and follow him.
