Text (Luke 15:3-6) Their grumbling triggered this story.

"Suppose one of you had a hundred sheep and lost one. Wouldn’t you leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the lost one until you found it? When found, you can be sure you would put it across your shoulders, rejoicing, and when you got home call in your friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Celebrate with me! I’ve found my lost sheep!’"(The Message -Eugene H. Peterson)

    Thought Starters
Today we heard the "Story of the Lost Sheep." This is a good time to learn about what sheep are like.

What do you know about sheep? The say "baa," has wool, and are little.

Do you know that a sheep lives to be about seven? They are tough animals. They can survive in hot or cold weather. Sheep graze on fresh grass. They move around in large groups called "flocks." The sheep will blindly "follow the lead sheep" so if one goes into a hole, they will all go into the hole. Sometimes we make mistakes too. That’s why it is so important to have someone watching over the sheep. What do you call the person who watches over the sheep? The shepherd.

Sheep only drink from pools of "still" water, no waves. Sheep are smelly animals.

Every spring their fleece or wool is shaved off. Spring is chosen because it is warmer and the sheep can do without their fleece.

Most lambs are born in the spring. A lamb will stay with their mother until it’s five months old when and they are six months old they are fully grown. The lamb always identifies or knows its mother by her "bleat" or the sound she makes.

The sheep have many enemies like mountain lions, wolves, and coyotes. If the sheep recognizes it’s mothers’ sound, is it possible that a sheep recognizes its shepherds’ voice?

Who is the Good Shepherd? Jesus is the Good Shepherd. Remember he knows his sheep and his sheep know him. Maybe by the sound of the Good Shepherd’s voice. Listen very carefully; are you the one he’s calling.

Hymn-"Savior Like A Shepherd Lead Us" – Dorothy A. Thrupp

Prayer-Dear Good Shepherd, thank you for calling our name and looking for us when we are lost. Help us to listen for your voice. Amen
