Text- (Luke 13:17b) But the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing. (New International Version) The congregation was delighted and cheered him on. (The Message-Eugene H. Peterson)
Have you been watching any of the Olympics? We talked about Jesus the great leader of the race last week.
This week we have seen athletes smile and cry. We have seen crowds jump up with Excitement and Delight. There have been some really loud crowds this week. These fans are really cheering these athletes on!
There is a story about Jesus when at the very end the crowd was excited and delighted and cheered him on. Let me tell you about it. (Tell the story about the crippled woman healed on the Sabbath, Luke 13:10-17)
Was the ruler of the Synagogue mad at Jesus? Yes because he healed the woman on the Sabbath.
Did the congregation care that he healed her? No, in fact one version of the Bible (The Message-Eugene H. Peterson) said, “The congregation was delighted and cheered him on.”
What were some of the wonderful things he was doing? Telling Parables, healing people, calming storms, and preaching. Those are just some of the wonderful things he was doing.
What kind of reception would Jesus get today if he were in the stadium and made someone who was crippled walk? Would there be cheering. Would he excite and delight the crowd?
My guess is that it would be loud and the fans in the stadium would be delighted with the wonderful things he was doing and cheer him on.
Hymn-“O For A Thousand Tongues” Carl G. Glaser
