A Tough Act

Text (Hebrews 11:8-9) By an act of faith, Abraham said yes to God’s call to travel to an unknown place that would become his home. When he left he had no idea where he was going. By and act of faith he lived in the country promised to him, lived as a stranger camping in tents. Isaac and Jacob did the same, living under the same promise. (The Message-Eugene H. Peterson)

Thought Starters
Today we’re going to talk about Faith. What is Faith? It is a short word, but is hard to understand.

Here is an easy way for you to understand an act of Faith. Will one of you stand up here in front of me facing the congregation? Close your eyes. Now fall backward. Don’t worry I will catch you. You will have to have an act of Faith that I will not let you hit the ground. (I imagine several of the children will want to do it.

What would you think if when you got home today your parents gathered you around and told you that your dad had a dream last night and God told him to pack up the family, quit his job, and move to California? God had a special plan for your parents and you. No job in California, no place to stay, but God said to go. Would that be ok with you? Would you have the Faith that God is leading your family?

That exact thing happened to Abraham. (Read the children Hebrews 11:8-9) By an act of Faith Abraham said yes!

By an act of Faith would you say yes?

Another way I see that you have an act of Faith is when you fall asleep in your car when going on a longer trip. Any passenger in a car who falls asleep has an act of Faith that the driver is paying close attention to the road and driving carefully.

Whenever I see a family member falling asleep in a car I’m driving I think of their faith in my careful driving.

When you hear in the Worship Centers and Sunday Schools, stories about Faith, think of Abraham and his faith, falling backward then someone catching you, and your parents whom you put your faith in to get you home safely. While they pray silently that God guides them safely too.

Hymn-"My Faith Looks Up To Thee" – Lowell Mason

Prayer-Dear God, Help us to have an act of Faith like Abraham. Continue to grow our Faith and to live it every day. Amen
