Text- (1 Kings 3: 12) I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. (New International Version)

(Proverbs 7:20) Keep my commandments and live, keep my teachings as the apple of your eye. (Revised Standard Version)

What do I have here? (Apple) Is it like a normal you get in a store? Most of the ones you get in a store are small and round aren’t they? Does this one look special? It took me ten minutes (or however how long) to pick this one out. So it’s special to me.

Did you ever hear the saying "Apple of your eye?" You are the "apple" of your parents and grandparents eye. (Pause) "Apple of your eye." It means to "adore you," to be "focused" on you.

I have a story to tell you, the most popular King in the Old Testament was King David. King David was a great king and was chosen by God, he was king in Jerusalem for thirty-three years. David had many sons; one of his sons was named Solomon. God also chose Solomon. One night while Solomon was sleeping, God appeared to him, "Solomon you can ask for anything you want and I will give it to you." Solomon said, "I would like wisdom and knowledge." God told Solomon, ‘because did not ask to be rich, you did not ask for a long life, I will grant you wisdom and knowledge."

Solomon said and did many wise things that were written down. Some of them are kept in the book of Proverbs. In chapter 7 verse two Solomon says, "Keep the Lord’s commandments and teachings as the apple of your eye."

What an important thing to say so close to the beginning of the Sunday School year. (Holding the apple up for them to look at while you say) "Keep the Lord’s commandments and teachings as the apple of your eye."

Maybe you will look at apples a little differently now. "Keep the Lord’s commandments and teachings as the apple of your eye."
