Is there anything so lovely, as infectiously joyful as the smile that graces the face of a child when they are pleased, delighted, and loved? It was while watching a movie that I was overcome with the magic of this moment. In this movie, a child who was raised Amish was being enrolled in a city public school after her mother had died. You can imagine the sense of fear and trepidation, let alone the sadness, grief and anger at losing her mother. In the movie this little girl, probably about six years old, was introduced to her new classmates and her different style of dress was being explained. After the teacher had finished her explanation to a silent room, she asked if anybody wanted to be the little girl’s “reading buddy.” Nearly every hand went up. A look of sheer delight swept across the child’s face! Her smile made me smile. That’s when it hit me. How powerful a child’s happiness is. Can you hear a child’s belly laugh without laughing yourself? Probably not, unless you’re very upset with said child. But that’s not the end of it…here’s the big finish. If a child’s happiness can bring us overwhelming joy, often to the point of tears, can you even begin to imagine what our happiness does to the heart of Father God? “If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.” (Matthew 7:11 NLT)
Remember this…your smile makes Him smile.
