Items Needed: PowerPoint or other visual of Joshua 1:8, masking tape, 8 page-sized Bible graphics, Bible reading from Deut. 6:6-9

(Read key verse to class.) "Meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Josh. 1:8" If each of us are going to know God’s word so that we know how to act and how to make right choices and what to do in every situation, we need to meditate on it day and night. In the Jewish culture, when they talked about doing something day and night, that didn’t mean two times a day; that meant all throughout the day. I’m going to read some other verses that will show you exactly what it means to meditate on God’s Word day and night. I need some volunteers, though. (Pick one.) I’m going to let each of you tape up a Bible picture, representing God’s Word, in the different places talked about in these verses.

God says, "These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. " He wants us to know them by heart or by memory as we would say. When this was written, people didn’t have Bibles, so they memorized scripture by talking and listening.

"Impress them on your children." Parents are supposed to talk about the Scriptures to their children.

"Talk about them when you sit at home." If you are going to learn God’s Word every time you sit down, where should you tape that Bible picture ? (Volunteer should tape picture on chair.)

Bible Graphic (Pick next volunteer.) "…and when you walk along the road." We aren’t going to go outside right now but you can tape the Bible picture on the window and we’ll know that means walking somewhere outside.

(Pick next volunteer.) "…when you lie down." (Volunteer tapes picture on the floor.)

(Pick next volunteer.) "…and when you get up." (Volunteer tapes picture eye level on wall).

(Pick next volunteer.) "Tie them as symbols on your hand… "(Picture is taped on hand.)

(Pick next volunteer.) "…and bind them on your foreheads." (Picture is taped on forehead.)

(Pick next volunteer.) "Write them on the door frames of your houses." (Picture is taped on doorframe.)

(Pick next volunteer.) "…and on your gates." Now this would be like an entryway or fence gate to your house, but will have you tape it out the exit door and we’ll know that means the entrance to our house.

Now, look around at all the places the Bibles are–when you’re sitting, walking outside, lying down, getting up, going through the door, and at the entrance of your house or yard. Now imaginine that each of you had one on your hand and forehead so that you would be reminded of the Scriptures whenever you saw your hand or looked in the mirror. If you were learning the Bible all those times, would you know what God says is the right choice when you need to make a decision? Sure, you would, because you have meditated on God’s Word day and night. We need to read God’s Word, memorize it, think about it all throughout the day, so that we can remember it to make the right choices.
