Transitional Times

Transitional Times

There are times that we need a quick transition OR maybe the adult service is going a little longer than the material you have planned. Here is a great idea that we use occasionally to fill time:

Create a list of Bible Characters or Themes. Write the words individually on a small paper (postcard size or smaller). Put them in a small basket or other container. Have a child volunteer to pick out one of the papers with a word on it. If for example, the word is “Donkey”, they act it out as it relates to a donkey in the Bible. They can use words or not if you choose.

The first child that guesses the right answer is next to act out the next word. It keeps the crowd involved, interested and is lots of laughter & fun!

We also use this same technique and will pick teams of three or four to work on a 10 minute skit. The theme may be, “Welcoming a new child at church.” The team of 3 or 4 come up with the dialog and always do a super job! Their creativity and enthusiasm are contagious!

Little Saints Library Idea

Little Saints Library Idea

I would like to start a library on wheels to go throughout the community, helping children in low income neighborhood giving them books to read and also provide a library for the children at my church to be checked out on youth sundays. Books help children to be able to read, learn to read and even get them in school. Since I have no room really in my church, it would have to be a mobile library.

Rewards go along way!

Rewards go along way!

I always keep a Sunshine Bucket in my office. The Sunshine Bucket is bright yellow and filled with all kinds of doo-dads (toys and trinkets from Oriental Trading, coupons for free kid’s meals and ice cream, stuff from the $ store). Whenever a child has something to celebrate (birthday, straight A’s, new baby sibling, etc.) they get to go to the Sunshine Bucket. Often adults in the church will bring in stuff to stock my bucket! And local fast food restaurants will donate coupons! The kids (and parents) love it!

Making New Kids Feel Welcome

Making New Kids Feel Welcome

This is one way I try to meet new kids and make them feel welcome at our church. I send new kids a postcard in the mail letting them know how glad I am that they have come to our church. I tell them to bring the postcard to me the next time they come to church. By doing this I get to meet them in person and then I let them choose a small gift from a stash of stuff I keep on hand all the time.
